Every year I pick the album that most impressed me during the year. It is rarely my favorite album of the year but rather the one that affected me the most. These albums are so good that they typically change my taste in music.
There was a lot of good music in 2023, but nothing so fresh that it totally blew my mind or changed me as a person. Some of my favorite bands released new albums that held my attention (Skrillex –
Close &
Fire, Wargasm -
Venom, Gunship -
Unicorn), but what new music I listened to ended up being mostly single tracks. The freshest artist that I listened to this year was
grandson (
I Love You, I’m Trying), and I almost picked this as my album this year, but ultimately it was lyrics and words that grabbed me and changed me this year.
Meg Myers is no stranger to my mixes, and I’ve been a fan since 2014, but her latest work,
TZIA, is an extraordinary text and the first album in ages that left me speechless. It held my attention so completely the first few listens that I needed to sit down just to process all the messaging in the words. It’s a genuine journey and perhaps a new spirituality. Full of illuminating hope, the album served as a constant antidote the toxic negativity all around our culture these days, and as a result, it served as a banner of my optimism in work and life these days. Listen to this stuff:
“Come, children of light/ Try not to get caught up in the egoic mind/ There are many vices to keep you swimming/ In the illusion of time”
“There will be no violence/ Or fear of the police/ No one will be silenced/ A new society/ Anew/ A new society”
“Cuz I just wanna touch somebody/ So they can be their own somebody/ Breathe air in their lungs/ Tell them they're enough/ Yea I just wanna touch somebody/ Yea I just wanna touch somеbody/ I'll reach into your soul, mind, body/ There's no onе to blame/ We're more than the pain/ Yea we are the same/ Yea we are the same”
Yeah, that’s my jam. I loved it. And the music matches all of it perfectly. Meg Myers might be crazy, but she’s speaking my language. TZIA is wonderful, and the lyrics cut through me like a lightning bolt this year, which is why it’s my album of 2023.
